Using selection layers

Learn how selection layers work and how they can help you work on more complex charts.

Written by Pablo Neirotti

Some charts might grow in complexity as you add more detail to them. Eventually, it will become very difficult to select the right objects without including others you didn't intend to select.

Selection layers help solve this issue by allowing you to choose which objects can be interacted by the Designer selection tools, such as clicking, rectangular selection (click & dragging), brush selection tool, etc...

Choosing a selection layer other than "All objects" will disable selecting on all other objects that don't belong to the currently active layer.

You may choose to work on the following layers:

  • All objects – select any kind of object

  • Foreground decorations – only select icons, text, plus images and shapes that were sent to the "Foreground decorations" layer.

  • Interactive objects – only select sections, areas, rows, seats and booths.

  • Background decorations – only select background images and shapes.

  • Surroundings – only select images and shapes that were sent to the "Surroundings" layer. Find more information about this layer below.

Surroundings layer

Contents of this layer will not be taken into account when fitting the contents of the chart to the size of the embedded chart.

The main purpose of this layer is to draw decorations that are outside the venue, such as streets, trees, or even parking lots. These are intended to fill the space around the venue, but it is okay if they aren't visible on all screens and devices.

For example, a chart which includes a street map like this:

... by having this image placed in the Surroundings layer, it will be used to fill in the gaps, but never make the chart too small when embedding it in the ticket buying flow, or in the Event Manager.

More flexible background images

When relying on layers, you may use multiple background images with the Image tool. These images can be rotated and have their transparency adjusted, which isn't possible with the "Background image" you can upload via the inspector in the Chart properties.

Images placed in the "Background decorations" or "Surroundings" layers are still selectable in "All objects":

However, if you only need to work with interactive objects, you may switch to that layer to stop background images from getting in the way of your selection:
